The Malaysian Grasshoppers were formed in 1993 predominantly
for the German speaking community in Kuala Lumpur at that
time. The basis of the team was to play hard and socialize
even harder. Over the years the MG’s have become international
in nature and have also welcomed many local Malaysians to
play with them, but the hard-core of the team is still German
speaking. It is a lasting tribute to Jurg Ruckmar and Karl-Heinz
Heil, the founding fathers of the Grasshoppers, that they
created a club able to field English, Argentinan, French,
Turks Greeks, and Germans all on the same pitch without any
international incidents, of note! The name Grasshopper emanates
from the Swiss team Grasshoppers of Zurich, and the MG’s
have tried in vain over the years to match their illustrious
European counterparts for style and quality! Over the years
The MG’s have not had too much success on the pitch,
but glimpses of excellence have surfaced sporadically from
a sea of mediocrity. Nevertheless, win or lose the MG’s
have Premier league status when it comes to the ‘third
half’ with many players shining more in the bar than
in the box! The future looks bright for the Malaysian Grasshoppers.
The numbers of players continues to increase, the standard
of play improves with every Weis beer consumed, and we have
a new Captain with a mission to take us to the stars, (or
is that bars?). Our opposition should be afraid….very
afraid!

HIBERNIANS
FC
(Singapore)

Captain: Ben Arnott

Hibernians FC of Singapore was established with the aim
of providing a recreational outlet for Expats in the form
of regular soccer games and a social environment for team-mates
and fellow soccer enthusiasts. Shortly after forming in 1996
the founding members adopted their present-day name, though
the origins of this decision is still very much in dispute.
One version has it that the group compromised on a designation
that would best represent those Scots and Irish on the team
who predominated (thus associating themselves with an Edinburgh-based
club that is represented by the Latin word for 'Irish'). The
more widely accepted version, however, has it that Big Eddie
Harkin of Donegal insisted that the side be called as such,
a decree with which no one was going to argue. Since its inception
Hibernians FC, or 'Hibs', has progressed to a point of near-competence.
From humble beginnings on the terraces of the East Coast,
to friendly games against local and visiting sides, to competitive
Sunday Leagues matches on Sentosa, the Club has come a long
way in a short time. In 1999 Hibs entered its first tournament
and placed a respectable third. The following year they duplicated
this result in the Golden Sun Championships, a 14-team competition
that ran from March to December, and a period that saw Hibs
claim some notable distinctions including most goals scored
for, least goals conceded and most yellow cards against! The
year 2000 was also significant in that Hibernians FC applied
for 'Society' status from the Singapore government, paving
the way for the sponsorship they presently enjoy from Muddy
Murphys Irish Pub, which is located in the Orchard Hotel
Shopping Arcade off Orchard Road. The following season Hibs
won the Sunsports League and in 2002 entered two teams into
the first and second divisions of the League.

LONG BAR
ANZACS FC (China)

Captain: Neil Cheshire
Players: International

Long Bar Anzacs – A new team to the Shanghai International
Football League (SIFL). After a season of being the whipping
boys in 2004/05 the team is now coming together strong and
aiming for mid-table obscurity this season. The Bangkok 7’s
will be the first overseas adventure for the Anzac global
all stars Neil Cheshire – England.
The work horse in the centre of the park renowned for taking
ball and man. Sean Hutchings – New
Zealand. Part one of the ‘old guard’ at the back.
Plays the best offside trap in SIFL and always votes for Barry
as man of the match. Barry Dawson –
England. The second half of the ‘old guard’ at
the back, who always votes for Sean as man of the match. This
will be the lad’s last game for the Anzacs before his
loan spell finishes. We wish him all the best back in the
UK. Simon Fung – Hong Kong. Not content
with the 7’s this guy is out in Bangkok on the rage
in the Bangkok 11’s. Let’s see what’s left
of him when we arrive. James Harding –
USA. Our first choice keeper (sorry Mick). This lad’s
got a big kick, big hands, and a big red face when he drinks
too much beer. Aleks Jovanovic – Serbia.
Always talks a good game, but been out of the team for a while
scouting in Thailand for a new centre half. Let’s see
what sort of shape he’s in for the tournament. Phil
Boyle – England. Likes to go out for dinner,
gets everyone drunk, then fails himself to get down to the
bars afterwards. Watch out for this speed drinker in Bangkok.
Mick Richmond – England. The David
Beckham of the team ‘flashin’ his cash. Expensive
tastes, and dodgy 80’s goalie shirts with shoulder pads.
This young snapper has it all and between the stick this guy
is a cat! Luis Vieyra – Mexico. Mr.
marathon man. This guy can run all day, and keeps the biggest
stock of tequila behind his desk that I have ever seen. Takahiro
Karatsu – Japan. The Edgar Davids of the team
with his cool specs. Just watch out for those crazy throw
ins. David Ibanez – Spain. Disappeared
for most of the season after the Hangzhou tournament. Last
seen hanging round Hean’s ladies.

Malaysia Airlines Veterans Football Club (MAS Veterans) was
established in 1993 with the aim of creating the opportunities
for the not-so-young Malaysia Airline staffs to showcase their
diminishing football skills, even though some of them prefer
to lye idle at their own cozy homes - while waiting for their
shares to mature at the stock market. They had participated
in several tournaments around the country, and also regularly
travel overseas for inter airline tournaments. This is goingto
be their first participation in the Bangkok 7 Tournament,
but definitely not their last. The team got their football
tricks and tips, albeit theoretically, frommany football greats
ranging from the Galacticos of Real Madrid to Man Utd's Red
Devils when those players travel on Malaysia Airlines. Howthey
wish that they are twenty years younger...

Shanghai Krauts FC the 2005 Phuket Tournament will already
be the third participation and the fifth in Thailand. As one
of the founding members of this tour, Krauts already arranged
with the organisers a green card directly into the Cup Competition
(no money, no honey). While last years successes
have been refused due to fatal incidents in Soi Crocodile,
we hope to see one of you in the finals to take home glory
to Shanghai. And with the CUP on hand we hope to level the
way for the Championship in our home league in Shanghai, where
the head-on-head competition already looks like Krauts vs.
Japan. With our 10th Years Anniversary Tournament in this
June, Krauts also proved not only to be a regular guest but
again a worthy host. And: If we fail enough at least
well have fun again and loads of excuses. Immer wieder
- immer wieder, immer wieder Shanghai Krauts

MONGRELS FC
(Taiwan)

Country: Taiwan
City: Taipei
Team Color: White or Blue
Captain: Aun
Players: International

The Taiwan Mongrels are to football what The Barbarians are
to Rugby. Well, not quite, but there are some interesting
comparisons. Both teams are open to players from all other
clubs (although we do not issue personal invitations or study
individual form too closely). Another similarity lies in our
mutual commitment to an attacking, free-flowing game (although
in this case they might have a tad more success than we do).
One big difference, though, is that while we encourage gentlemanly
conduct on the field, we do not, like the Baa Baas, expect
members of our pack to remain on their best behaviour when
they are out and about town. After all, there is no point
in asking for the impossible. Back on the field, here are
a few players to watch out for. At the back, don’t be
surprised if you are the victim of a crunchingly fair tackle
from Rockveiler Roberts (a.k.a. the Rock), hunted down by
Bloodhound Blundon, or unable to escape the watchful eye of
Harrier Hewitt; in the middle of the park, Afghan Ackroyd
goes for the bigger prey, while Collie Curtis will have you
all in your 6-yard box in an instant and Greyhound Grimaud
will be sure to get to the ball before you. And if one of
us gets into trouble, Saint Bernard Schofield will surely
be there to save the day. This is our second tour, following
a highly successful inaugural appearance in the Manila 6’s
last November, and we plan to enter a team into many of these
great tournaments across S.E. Asia, so please come and have
a beer with us – before the game, if we are drawn to
play. Cheers!

TEAM BONDI (Australia)

Country: Australia
City: Sydney
Team Color: White
Captain: Ian Gray
Players: Australian
|
|
Team Bondi,
first participation for this team from Australia... From the
golden sands of the world famous Bondi Beach in Sydney, the
Bondi Boys have been playing together for more years than
they wish to admit to. Don't be fooled though by their laid
back approach as the team boasts several former pros and Internationals.
Team Bondi has been travelling the “Sevens Circuit"
since 2002 with some outstanding results. Winners in Manila,
Penang & Kuala Lumpur tournaments, as well as, runners
up in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Shanghai events, the boys have
a long list of titles under their belt back home as well.
The team makes it’s first appearance at the Phuket tournament
and is led by former Socceroo, Australian Internationals,
Ian Gray (35 caps) who will bring his experience and skill
to the fore. Seasoned veterans Avrom Sank, Clive Barrett and
Gary Braude are the engine room of the squad. While defensive
hardmen, Phil Wolanski, Mick Swibel, Gary Weiss, and Craig
Nathan will hope to relive those glory days of the past. The
fearless Andy Prentice steps in between the sticks, while
“youngsters” Ethan Nyholm and Terry Sperber will
do all the running. Team Bondi aims to ride the crest of the
waves both on and off the field under the guidance of player/coach,
Ian Gray.
